Polish Pope Celebrated on Social Media

WADOWICE, Poland (ChurchMilitant.com) - Celebrating the centenary of Pope Saint John Paul II's birth, religious services and other events are occurring throughout Poland along with a social media campaign in the wake of the Wuhan virus.

Born May 18, 1920, Karol Wojtyła became the first non-Italian pope since the sixteenth century and history's first pope from a Slavonic country in 1978.

Week-long commemoration ceremonies planned to happen in Wadowice ― the Polish town of John Paul II's birth ― have been postponed due to pandemic-related lockdown measures.

But online initiatives in the Wadowice and throughout the country have been launched to recall key events in John Paul II's life and teachings.

Archbishop Stanisław Gądecki, president of the Polish bishops' conference, asked Catholics to use the hashtag #ThankYouJohnPaul2 on social media to share memories of how John Paul II influenced their lives and faith.

"In this way we can express our gratitude to Pope John Paul II, for what he has brought and brings to our personal, family and social life, for all the meetings we had with him, in which we had the opportunity to participate," he said, "for his words, which we remember the most, for the inspirations he has evoked and continues to evoke in us."

"In this way, we will also tell about St. John Paul II to the young generation which did not have the opportunity to get to know the Pope more closely, but is so much present in social media."

Arkady Rzegocki, Polish ambassador to London, encouraged others to join the initiative in a tweet, saying, "Let's celebrate the 100th birthday of Pope Saint John Paul II on 18th of May by sharing photos and videos of the Pope with the #ThankYouJohnPaul2 hashtag!"

Responses to Social Media Initiative

Many in Poland and throughout the world have already responded enthusiastically to the initiative.

Father Janusz Chyła from Poland said, "Thank you you saint #JPII  I was able to grow up, discover my calling, shape my mind and heart during his pontificate. Thank you for the testimony, every word spoken and written, and for meetings in the Fatherland and Rome."

No other Pope has done more to heal the painful wounds and did more than anyone else in history to effectively erase the scourge of antisemitism.

Father Manuel Solís from the Spanish-speaking world said, "Thanks John Paul II. You have taught us how to forgive as Jesus Christ."

Father Mark in England said in a tweet, "I met His Holiness having attended his private Mass where I had the honour to read before him in 1994. He was and is a great Saint and he has inspired me in my vocation to not be afraid. I really do love him! Meeting him in 1994."

American Fr. Joseph Faulkner in Nebraska said, "I love you, Holy Father. You give me hope." These were the only words I could think to say to St. John Paul II when we met him in January 2003."

Praise from Poland's Chief Rabbi

Beyond Catholic clergy and laity, others such as the chief rabbi of Poland have expressed gratitude to John Paul II.

In his Sunday announcement on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the birth of John Paul II, Chief Rabbi of Poland Michael Schudrich said, "The Jewish community of Poland, together with Jews throughout the world, always remembers the life of Pope John Paul II."

"In the centennial year of his birth we take a moment to recognize the profound impact he had on the world as a whole and for us particularly on Jewish-Christian reconciliation and dialogue," he continued.

"Pope John Paul II embodied the essential quality of mutual respect and honoring every human being as a creation of God. No other Pope has done more to heal the painful wounds and did more than anyone else in history to effectively erase the scourge of antisemitism," the rabbi declared.

During his 26-year pontificate, John Paul II traveled to 129 countries, published four encyclicals and wrote several books.

He died on April 2, 2005,  the Vigil of Divine Mercy Sunday (which he insituted), was beatified on May 1, 2011 and canonized on April 27, 2014.

Totalitarian Takeover

DETROIT (ChurchMilitant.com) - A communist group is calling for Democrat governors and politicians to use the Wuhan virus panic to shift the United States to socialism.

In April, the Democratic Socialists of America, an activist group boasting the membership of radical socialist Democrat representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Rashida Tlaib, proposed a "global democratic socialist response" to the virus, calling it "a capitalist, not a Chinese virus."

Democrat federal politicians, state governors and leftist social media giants are conforming to the DSA's call.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom

Protesters have been calling out Democrat governors like California's Gavin Newsom, Wisconsin's Tony Evers, Virginia's Ralph Northam and Michigan's Gretchen Whitmer. They're accusing the governors of forcing small businesses to close, claiming it's destroying the economy.

Last week, Federal Reserve Board Chairman Jerome Powell revealed that in March alone, 40% of workers making $40,000 per year or less lost their jobs.

In March and April, over 36 million workers applied for unemployment, with between 2.5 and 3.2 million workers filing each week.

Some people believe the Democratic push to keep small businesses closed is to hurt President Donald Trump, with his own son, Eric, saying on Saturday that Democrats "think they're taking away Donald Trump's greatest tool, which is to go into an arena and fill it with 50,000 people every time."

Democrats are also pushing for mail-in ballots to become the norm. In April, fake Catholic Democrat Nancy Pelosi claimed: "Vote-by-mail is essential to protecting the future of our democracy as we confront this public health crisis," adding, "There is no legitimate argument against enacting it."

Democrat federal politicians, state governors and leftist social media giants are conforming to the DSA's call.

In another interview, she asserted, "Vote by mail is so important to ... our democracy so that people have access to voting and not be deterred, especially at this time, by the admonition to stay home."

But critics maintain mail-in-voting is far more apt to manipulation and fraud than standard voting practices. The Federal Election Commission (FEC) noted that more than 28 million mail-in ballots were uncounted between 2012 and 2018 elections, accounting for one-fifth of absentee ballots.

During the 2016 and 2018 elections, it was reported that 16.4 million mail-in ballots went missing.

Social media, often showing itself to be leftist in its policies, has been working to silence dissent.

President Trump commented on Twitter on the Democrats' plan: "Absentee ballots are a great way to vote for the many senior citizens, military and others who can't get to the polls on election day. These ballots are very different from 100% mail-in voting, which is 'RIPE for FRAUD' and shouldn't be allowed!"

Social media, often showing itself to be leftist in its policies, has been working to silence dissent, with Facebook recently banning the organizers of state lockdown protests as "harmful misinformation."

Facebook representatives confirmed it took down protest pages at the request of state governments for New Jersey, California and Nebraska.

YouTube has also been accused of censoring information critical of stay-at-home policies, like a video from the former head of biostatistics, epidemiology and research design at Rockefeller University Dr. Knut M. Wittkowski. He's a proponent of "herd immunity" to fight the Wuhan virus.

He said in his now-deleted video, "With all respiratory diseases, the only thing that stops the disease is herd immunity. About 80% of the people need to have had contact with the virus, and the majority of them won't even have recognized that they were infected."

The Democratic Socialists of America featured a quote by economist Milton Friedman, saying "Only a crisis — actual or perceived — produces real change," and further add that their purpose is "to build a new world on the ashes of the old."

Obama’s Corrupt Catholics

WASHINGTON (ChurchMilitant.com) - President Donald Trump is urging Congress to interrogate his predecessor over his role in spying on Trump's officials.

On Thursday, Trump urged that Barack Obama  whom Catholics twice voted into office  be put under oath regarding his role in the illegal surveillance of Trump's former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn.

Image
President Trump with General Flynn

"If I were a senator or congressman, the first person I would call to testify about the biggest political crime and scandal in the history of the USA, by FAR, is former President Obama," Trump tweeted.

Following the DOJ's dismissal of the media-driven case against Flynn, Obama on May 9 called into question the rule of law.

"That's the kind of stuff where you begin to get worried that basic — not just institutional norms — but our basic understanding of rule of law is at risk," Obama lamented. "And when you start moving in those directions, it can accelerate pretty quickly, as we've seen in other places."

The case has turned into looking at which members of Obama's administration were involved in spying.

Topping the list is fake Catholic Joe Biden, who was tapped by Obama to help garner the Catholic vote. Biden's social justice creed resonated with American Catholics, who were groomed for decades to lump social justice policies on such issues as immigration or poverty with intrinsic moral evils such as abortion, contraception, euthanasia, and so-called same-sex marriage.

The cardinal, whom Obama called 'saintly,' has been exposed as a homosexual predator and a satanist.

The former vice president not only supports abortion on demand but also same-sex marriage. In 2016, Biden gained notoriety by officiating a gay wedding of two male White House staffers in Washington.

After the ceremony, Biden tweeted, "Proud to marry Brian and Joe at my house. Couldn't be happier, two longtime White House staffers, two great guys."

If elected president in November, Catholic-in-name-only Biden would face the following four impeachable scandals:

  • Credible sexual assault allegations from former Senate staffer Tara Reade
  • Illegally spying on a rival's campaign
  • Using U.S. aid to protect his son from prosecution in Ukraine
  • Illegal financial gain in China and Ukraine

Obama's use of Catholics isn't limited to Biden. He began his political aspirations by eliciting help from powerful Catholics beginning in 1985 as a so-called community organizer in Chicago. Fresh out of college, Obama was funded by U.S. bishops, notably the archbishop of Chicago, Cdl. Joseph Bernardin.

After Catholics proved to be the swing vote in 2008 that seated Obama in the oval office, Notre Dame gave him a platform in 2009 where he thanked the late Bernardin during his commencement speech.

"I can still remember him speaking at one of the first organizing meetings I attended on the South Side," recalled Obama. "He stood as both a lighthouse and a crossroads, unafraid to speak his mind on moral issues ranging from poverty, AIDS and abortion to the death penalty and nuclear war."

This approach in the past 40 years succeeded in confusing Catholic voters.

The cardinal, whom Obama called "saintly," has been exposed as a homosexual predator and a satanist. It was his seamless garment jargon that helped confuse Catholics into voting for pro-abortion politicians like Obama, Biden, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, the late Sen. Ted Kennedy and New York's Gov. Andrew Cuomo, among many others.

Bernardin did so by equating social justice policies related to the death penalty or war with intrinsic evils like abortion and so-called same-sex marriage. In 1983, Bernardin started peddling this so-called theory by speaking of "respect for life" but then quickly lumping together abortion and capital punishment with eugenics, nuclear war and euthanasia. A few months later, he adopted the popular terminology of "seamless garment" and rolled in more social justice issues such as human rights, hunger and poverty.

Image
Cdl. Joseph Bernadin

By the mid-1990s, the U.S. bishops drafted Catholic voting guidelines that expanded the consistent ethic of life to "protect human life and promote human dignity." This emphasized poverty, violence and injustice. Racism, employment, education, housing and health care were added soon after. The voter's guide from U.S. bishops in 2015 lumps together intrinsic evils like abortion, euthanasia and redefining marriage with poverty and racism.

This approach in the past 40 years succeeded in confusing Catholic voters, including some seemingly good bishops into voting for pro-death politicians like Obama. Rhode Island's Bp. Thomas Tobin has a reputation for orthodoxy but was a registered Democrat until the Democratic National Convention (DNC) in 2012.

During 2012 DNC in Charlotte, supporters of abortion rights, gay marriage, and Obama's contraception mandate were quite vocal. Democrats even wanted to strip the phrase "God-given" from the party's platform.

It was only then that Tobin announced he was finally ending his longtime registration as a Democrat and becoming Republican.

For John Paul, those who enable abortion to continue by voting into office pro-abortion politicians like Obama and Biden are causing the greatest scandal.

"I just can't be associated structurally with that group, in terms of abortion and NARAL and Planned Parenthood and the same-sex marriage and the cultural destruction I saw going on," observed Tobin. "The a-ha moment for me was the 2012 Democratic National Convention. ... It was just awful."

But blurry voting guidelines from U.S. bishops and little pushback from prelates like Tobin assured Obama would again receive the majority of swing vote from Catholics to again gain the White House.

Other prominent Catholics continued to enable Obama like Bernardin's predecessor, Cdl. Blase Cupich. Chicago's current archbishop covered up Bernardin's crimes while promoting his "seamless garment" theory.

In 2015, Cupich shocked many by equating the evil of the abortion industry's sale of babies' body parts to a broken immigration system and joblessness. As revolting as trafficking in the body parts of aborted children is, however, the cardinal said:

We should be no less appalled by the indifference toward the thousands of people who die daily for lack of decent medical care, who are denied rights by a broken immigration system and by racism, who suffer in hunger, joblessness and want, who pay the price of violence in gun-saturated neighborhoods or who are executed by the state in the name of justice.

Trump is terming the recent spy scandal, "Obamagate" and saying it's "the biggest political crime in American history."

Faithful Catholics like the late Pope St. John Paul II would disagree. For John Paul, those who enable abortion to continue by voting into office pro-abortion politicians like Obama and Biden are causing the greatest scandal.

In his 1984 apostolic exhortation Reconciliation and Penance, John Paul stated:

It is a case of the very personal sins of those who cause or support evil or who exploit it; of those who are in a position to avoid, eliminate or at least limit certain social evils but who fail to do so out of laziness, fear or the conspiracy of silence, through secret complicity or indifference; of those who take refuge in the supposed impossibility of changing the world and also of those who sidestep the effort and sacrifice required, producing specious reasons of higher order.

"The real responsibility, then, lies with individuals," the pontiff noted.

Dated May 8 — the feast day of Our Lady of the Rosary of Pompeii, known for the conversion of a diehard satanist in the late 1800s — the "Appeal for the Church and the World to Catholics and all people of good will," which discusses globalists using the Wuhan virus to push for one world government, has yet to receive official acknowledgment from the Vatican or the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.

This, despite the fact that a firestorm ensued in the media over the document. To date, it has racked up 40,000 signatures, which makes the deafening silence from the Vatican even more strange.

The appeal states, "[U]nder the pretext of the COVID-19 epidemic, the inalienable rights of citizens have in many cases been violated and their fundamental freedoms, have been disproportionately and unjustifiably restricted."

An initiative of Abp. Carlo Viganò, the appeal has been signed by lay professionals, priests and  prelates, including prefect emeritus of Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith, Cdl. Gerhard Müller; bishop emeritus of Hong Kong, Cdl. Joseph Zen; auxiliary bishop of Astana, Athanasius Schneider; and U.S. bishop of Tyler, Texas, Joseph Strickland.

The appeal continues: "[T]here are powers interested in creating panic among the world’s population with the sole aim of permanently imposing unacceptable forms of restriction on freedoms, of controlling people … The imposition of these illiberal measures is a disturbing prelude to the realization of a world government beyond all control."

While neither the Vatican nor the USCCB have responded, since lockdown measures began, Pope Francis has sided with the Italian prime minister against Italian bishops seeking to resume public worship, called for consideration of universal basic income, and joined an interreligious initiative of prayer, fasting and acts of charity to end the pandemic.

Meanwhile, the president of the USCCB, Abp. José Gómez of Los Angeles, has profited from the pandemic by taking $7 million of PPP relief money, in addition to already having a $700 million endowment and $180 million in cash.

Why the Silence, Trads?

TRANSCRIPT

As you may know, last month Church Militant released a Spotlight Investigation blowing the lid off decades of sexual abuse and cover-up in the breakaway Catholic group, the Society of St. Pius X, also known as the SSPX.

The SSPX claimed the liturgical-high ground in the 1970s following the madness unleashed on the Church in the wake of Vatican II.

The group's founder, Abp. Marcel Lefebvre, was eventually excommunicated for consecrating four bishops, directly contravening orders from Pope John Paul II to stand down and not do it. He did it anyway, and that initial seedbed of disobedience has now come back in spades on the Society.

A cult-like aura developed around the Society — a word, for the record, repeated to us over and over by multiple former followers and priests of the society. In that cultish community, a climate developed where priests were treated as direct messengers of the Most High who could never be questioned, much less challenged.

Perhaps the one main reason this kind of evil is able to persist is because of the silence of those who know about it ... the media types who ... will not speak of it.

To challenge them was to see yourself shown the door, publicly humiliated, even having your name called out from the pulpit — a practice that still continues today. What keeps the Society and its adherents glued together is their devotion to the Traditional Latin Mass first and foremost.

Beyond that, there are many within the Society who believe there is no salvation outside the SSPX, that Rome is apostate, the Novus Ordo Mass is invalid and even further, that it is actually "evil" — that term applied by none other than SSPX Bp. Bernard Fellay — a man whose actions in hiding and moving around abusive priests within the Society gives him a special familiarity with "evil."

While most of them are "prudential" in not speaking about all that in the open, it is nonetheless a credal point for many in the Society and its supporters. They see — not without justification — the liturgical and doctrinal insanity in the Church, which both preceded Francis and has grown exponentially on his watch. Again, it's an absolutely correct diagnosis. Church Militant has been reporting on that for years now and taking it on the chops from many in the authentic hierarchy who go out of their way to disparage us and me personally. Undeterred, however, we remain in the Church and press on.

So on the matter of diagnosing the disease of modernism in the Church, SSPX followers and Church Militant have shared much in common over the years — so much so that a sizable number of them followed us.

But where we must part company is not the diagnosis, but the remedy. Disobedience is never a proper course of action — never. And like the Church-of-Nice crowd who also were disobedient, just in other areas, one wrong first step sets your feet on the path to multiple evils.

Hence, there was the cover-up — an ongoing cover-up by the way — of multiple clergy, right up to the present day of heinous sex abuse of minors and breaking up of families, impregnating women and paying hush money. How is this any different from the scandal that rocked the Church in 2002 when the Boston Globe reported in its Spotlight series the same type of thing?

The only substantive difference is that more of the Church-of-Nice victims were teenage males. It seems a bit more evenly split in the SSPX abuse cases between homosexual and heterosexual abuse.

And speaking of differences, perhaps the one main reason this kind of evil is able to persist is because of the silence of those who know about it, and here, we are speaking on the secondary level — the media types who know of it but will not speak of it.

In the Boston Globe scandal, it came out that not only did all sorts of chancery personnel and bishops know of the filth, but so too did a surprising number of Catholic media. And when the news of hompredator cardinal McCarrick broke in 2018, news came tumbling out of the closet that loads of "Catholic media" — who mistakenly think of themselves as journalists — also knew of it, or had heard this and that, but could not go near the story for fear of upsetting their precious self-centered relationships with bishops.

So boys and seminarians continued to get raped while they wrote meaningless tomes and flooded Catholic media sites with opinion pieces, waxing eloquently and most importantly hypocritically on one subject after another, racking up speaking fees and book deals and conference appearances. You see, in the "Catholic world," if you tick off either your base or those who grant you access, your goose is cooked. Say the whole truth and the wrath of the establishment falls on your head.

In the 'Catholic world,' if you tick off either your base or those who grant you access, your goose is cooked.

This brings us to the so-called "traditional" Catholic websites, publications and personalities —you know, the ones always chest-thumping to "unite the clans." That's a load of self-serving, self-promoting garbage.

Our Spotlight investigation has been out almost a full month and there hasn't been a peep from any other Catholic media types aside from Tim and David Gordon as well as Patrick Coffin and John Zmirak — just a handful with any remaining integrity.

And yes, we say "integrity," because for the so-called trads — more in love with the Traditional Latin Mass than the actual truth — they have completely ignored this story, which by the way has now broken into secular media. They always do.

The Kansas City Star this past weekend ran a lengthy exposé on its front page spelling out the entire case in Saint Mary's, and if it were possible — their investigation, as far as Saint Mary's goes — was even more comprehensive than ours, although we did get a mention, thank you.

So why is it that when the Church-of-Nice scandals broke, these "trads" couldn't keep their collective mouths shut, using the opportunity to extend their argument to pillory Rome, denounce the Novus Ordo Mass as from the Devil, allowing hundreds of supporters to flood their comboxes calling Pope Francis the Antichrist — and that was on a good day.

Yes, sexual assault in the Church of Nice and the "trads" start popping champagne corks, feeling even more superior to all other Catholics, if that's even possible. But the same, exact pattern is proved to be the case in the SSPX and there's stone-cold silence, aside from the filthy comments directed at Church Militant for breaking the story.

The so-called "traditional" Catholics spewed forth a degree of venom at us, using "G-D" and even publicly calling Christine Niles the "C-word" on Twitter — yes, you heard that right, and by that we mean actually spelling out the "C-word," not just saying the abbreviation.

We've taken incoming rounds for quite a while now, and hands down, we have never received anything like the torrent of filth which came from this crowd of supposedly "traditional" Catholics. We have no idea what tradition they are adhering to, but it certainly is not Catholic.

It is disgraceful that this crowd of traditional media types has said not a word about this sex abuse and the cover-up.

The 'circle the wagons' and 'damn the torpedoes' approach of the 'trad' community is damning itself, as is evidenced by the severe lack of integrity in their willful unwillingness to engage with the truth.

And given the vast knowledge of it, including that Abp. Fellay who led the Society for many years, and his direct, hands-on role in unleashing some of these predator priests, it is an appalling lack of integrity by supposed "journalists" to fall silent just so they cannot have any stain on their narrative that all we need back is the Traditional Latin Mass and all will be fine.

That's wrong! That single-minded, naïve approach has always been wrong. It's never been right. The Church fell apart in the 60s when the Latin Mass was the only game in town. Reverent liturgy, and yes, the Latin Mass, is only one piece of the puzzle in restoring the Church.

Unfortunately, the cult-like world and mindset that develops around this do little else other than to fuel the heterodox's and dissidents' rantings about how traditional Catholics are a relic from the past and need to be ignored. The "circle the wagons" and "damn the torpedoes" approach of the "trad" community is damning itself, as is evidenced by the severe lack of integrity in their willful unwillingness to engage with the truth.

They rightfully tore McCarrick and the whole cover-up of his evil by the likes of Cupich and Wuerl. They tore it to pieces but refuse to utter a word against the exact same behavior in their own house. It is disingenuous, hypocritical and beyond off-putting.

This crowd has within its ranks some of the loudest mouths about restoring authentic manhood in Catholic circles. Unfortunately, the manhood they present is more like a "Masters of the Universe" superiority manhood, where they rule and everyone else gets to grovel before them.

They comically go on somehow equating scotch and cigars being related to masculinity — as well as the need to "unite the clans" — but they fail to tell you exactly what the clans would be uniting around. Hint: It won't be anything truthful, as long as it upsets their applecart.

They are no different than the Church-of-Nice establishment they rightfully lambasted for enabling abuse for decades. In fact, in one way, they are actually worse. The Church-of-Nice crowd never presented itself as superior Catholics — Catholic elites, in many ways. Maybe they'd heard of this filth within the SSPX before, maybe not. But they have now.

Until they step up and start reporting on it, they should be dismissed out of hand because they are lying by their silence. Our Lord called out hypocrites and that is Catholic tradition.

Hey, self-appointed public trad leaders — here's a question for you: What if it was your child?

George Soros: Pandemic the Crisis of a Lifetime

DETROIT (ChurchMilitant.com) - Leftist billionaire George Soros is calling the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) pandemic the crisis of his lifetime, a stunning statement given his 89 years and his make-or-break meddling with world markets and elections over the decades.

"Even before the pandemic hit, I realized that we were in a revolutionary moment where what would be impossible or even inconceivable in normal times had become not only possible, but probably absolutely necessary," Soros said in a recent interview.

Image
Germany's Federal Constitutional Court

An atheist and leading advocate of globalism, Soros said that everything is "up for grabs" in the wake of the Wuhan virus, adding that the only thing he knows for certain is "We will not go back to where we were when the pandemic started."

The Hungarian-born influencer called the outbreak and its ensuing effects "unprecedented" and said — referring to uncertain economic and political futures — he doesn't believe anyone "knows how capitalism will evolve."

Soros said he was "particularly concerned" about the effects of the outbreak on the European Union: "It is an incomplete union. It was in the process of being created. But the process process was never completed and that makes Europe exceptionally vulnerable — more vulnerable than the U.S. not just because it is an incomplete union but also because it is based on the rule of law."

Recent independent moves by Germany's Federal Constitutional Court are especially worrisome for Soros, and he expressed concerns that other countries, mentioning Hungary and Poland by name, would follow suit and question the decisions of the European Court of Justice.

Free clip from CHURCH MILITANT Premium

To address the €1 trillion ($1.1 trillion) that European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen says Europe needs to fight the CCP pandemic, Soros is proposing a type of bond  called "consols."

He believes the bonds would actually sidestep the "problem" of the German Court decision "because [consols] would be issued by the EU as a whole, would automatically be proportional, and would remain so eternally (referring to their earlier name of Perpetual Bonds)."

Image
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán

Soros took the opportunity to call out Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, whom he claims has "used the COVID-19 emergency to appoint himself dictator," referring to Orbán's right, as ratified by parliament, to wield extra powers during a time of national emergency.

"The [Hungarian] parliament is kept in session to rubber-stamp [Orbán's] decrees, which clearly violate European law," he suggested, adding, "If the German court's verdict prevents the EU from resisting these developments, it will be the end of the EU as we know it."

Orbán was recently vindicated by the European Union, however, with the European Commission confirming that the prime minister's new powers during the pandemic don't breach EU law.

Since 2012 the Hungarian Fidesz government has labeled George Soros an enemy of the state due to his political machinations in the European refugee crisis and banned Soros and his Open Society Foundations, which alleges to advance "justice, education, public health and independent media," but in fact pushes a leftist, globalist agenda.

Soros also took time to knock conservative Italian political leader Matteo Salvini for "agitating for Italy to leave the euro and also the European Union." Revealing his bias, he said: "Fortunately, his personal popularity has declined since he left the government," although "his advocacy is gaining followers."

Image
Italian political leader Matteo Salvini

"What would be left of Europe without Italy, which used to be the most pro-European country?" Soros asked, underscoring his fear for the EU's future.

Soros also cast aspersions at President Trump, claiming the commander-in-chief "would like to be a dictator."

"But," he added, Trump "cannot be one because there is a Constitution in the United States that people still respect."

Observers note a certain irony in Soros' praise for the rule of law, noting that his financial contributions have helped influence the outcome of U.S. elections at various levels. The leftist billionaire is a major donor to Democratic Party politicians, among the top four "ultra-wealthy Americans funding the 2020 presidential elections so far."

In an infamous 1993 interview with Steve Kroft of 60 Minutes, Soros confessed to assisting Nazis in confiscating property from the Jewish people during the Holocaust — a collaboration about which he has "no regrets."

Soros has been condemned by the government of Israel and he and staff of his Open Society Foundations have been banned in the Philippines, Russia, Turkey, Poland and Pakistan.

Authoritarian lockdowns by mostly Democratic governors are continuing as are protests against them.

The protests moved into the courts with at least 14 state governments or governors being sued, and in Michigan fed up doctors are suing Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, perhaps the most authoritarian.

Last Tuesday, Grand Health Partners, Wellston Medical Center, Primary Health Services and patient Jeffery Gulick filed suit against Whitmer in federal district court.

Their complaint states her last extension of shelter-in-place orders, without approval from the state legislature, infringes upon civil rights and civil liberties.

The lawsuit is arguing the original goal of containing the virus and flattening the curve has been achieved, and everything thereafter continues to be an overreach by Whitmer.

The state originally anticipated 220,000 hospitalizations as a result of the Wuhan virus. Since April 27, the number never went above 3 thousand, less than 1.4% of the projected amount.

Hospitals also appear to be aptly prepared for another outbreak with over 2,400 ventilators available, almost 1,000 ICU beds and more than 7 thousand unoccupied hospital beds at the moment.

Owing to the lockdowns, the number of patients these medical clinics could see dropped by 95%, a drop with potentially deadly consequences.

Doctor Randal Baker of Grand Health Partners gave his professional opinion saying, "This shutdown is risking lives and imperiling health."

The lawsuit mentions one patient who was supposed to have a kidney stone removed two weeks after his diagnosis.

However, Whitmer's orders resulted in his surgery being pushed back two months, forcing him to be hospitalized and undergo emergency surgery.

Governor Whitmer is also facing another lawsuit, this one from Michigan's state legislature, for her alleged overreach amid the lockdown, and is continuing to attack Michiganders for trying to end them.

Italian politician Sara Cunial is slamming totalitarianism and laying blame on billionaire Bill Gates.

On May 14, Cunial argued in the Italian Parliament that political leaders are using the Wuhan virus as an excuse to override personal freedom and enact authoritarian policies.

She denounced the government's deference to the World Health Organization, which is funded in part by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Her speech comes after recent allegations that Bill Gates offered Nigerian lawmakers $10 million to pass a mandatory vaccination bill into law.

Catholics are troubled by the idea of mandatory vaccination since some vaccines are developed using cell lines from the bodies of aborted babies, which is against Catholic teaching.

One major concern for Catholics is that Gates supports population control. For instance, in 2018 he called population growth in Africa a "challenge," and trumpeted contraceptives as the solution, saying, "The biggest things are the modern tools of contraception."

During the Wuhan virus pandemic, many have criticized severe lockdown measures and government overreach.

Now, as lockdowns begin to loosen, people like Cunial are afraid tight government control might stick around as the new normal.

Bay State Bishop vs. USCCB

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (ChurchMilitant.com) - Tension is brewing between the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) and the bishop of Springfield, Massachusetts, who is forbidding Holy Communion on the tongue in spite of the USCCB's recent decision to the contrary.

In anticipation of Massachusetts' planned multiphase reopening, Springfield bishop Mitchell T. Rozanski sent his clergy a document titled "Re-Opening Considerations" to give guidelines and suggestions for conducting public Masses as they resume.

Image
Springfield parishes have been empty since March

Maintaining previous diocesan restrictions and state guidelines, Rozanski is requiring that at public Masses, Holy Communion is offered in the hand only, Holy Water fonts remain empty and covered, social distancing is enforced at a minimum of six feet between individuals and masks be worn at all times.

Rozanski's prohibition of Holy Communion on the tongue contradicts the USCCB's "Guidelines for Sacraments and Pastoral Care" published in late April, which states:

We have carefully considered the question of Communion on the tongue vs. Communion in the hand. Given the Church's existing guidance on this point (see Redemptionis Sacramentum, no. 92), and recognizing the differing judgments and sensibilities that are involved, we believe that, with the precautions listed here, it is possible to distribute on the tongue without unreasonable risk.

Rozanski's document further states that he "also anticipates extending the general dispensation [dispensation from one's Sunday obligation to attend Mass]."

Rozanski is requiring that at public Masses, Holy Communion is offered in the hand only.

For collecting donations, Rozanski forbids baskets being passed hand-to-hand, permits ushers using baskets with extended arms and suggests the option of baskets at the entrances for parishioners to drop off donations before Mass: "This is best collected at the beginning to avoid back-ups when people are exiting church. These baskets should be clearly marked."

Rozanski also wishes to increase the number of and militarize ushers to keep count of Mass attendees, while ensuring all attendees are wearing masks and observing social distancing.

"Every parish will need ushers to facilitate protocols. Number needed will be based on number of entrances," states the document. "Given the increased duties, current ushers may need to be supplemented with young members. Consider asking parishioners with law enforcement backgrounds to help out, as they tend to have experience dealing with the public in controlled situations."

Rozanski is one of the American bishops to have implemented extreme and sometimes unprecedented measures during the Wuhan virus.

Consider asking parishioners with law enforcement backgrounds to help out as they tend to have experience dealing with the public in controlled situations.

In March, he ordered all churches and chapels closed and ultimately suspended anointing the sick

The suspension came after Rozanski tried a novel method for administering the last rites, saying, "I am allowing the assigned Catholic hospital chaplains, standing outside a patient's room or away from their bedside, to dab a cotton swab with Holy Oil and then allow a nurse to enter the patient's room and administer the oil."

Champion of Interreligious Dialogue

Rozanski served as the chair for the USCCB's Committee on Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs (EIA) from 2014–2017.

In 2016, the USCCB participated in a panel discussion with the Islamic Society of North America — a front group of the Muslim Brotherhood. The discussion was sponsored by the National Catholic-Muslim Dialogue, an outreach group of the EIA chaired by Rozanski at the time.

Image

Later that year, Rozanski sponsored "Looking at the Face of Mercy Through the Eyes of God" — an interfaith dialogue — through the dioceses's Office of Faith Formation. The dialogue included speakers such as Imam Rasul Seifullah of the Al-Baqi Islamic Center for Human Excellence and Rabbi Devorah Jacobson, director of spiritual life for Jewish Geriatric Services Lifecare.

In 2017, Rozanski endorsed Jordan Denari Duffner's book, Finding Jesus Among Muslims: How Loving Islam Makes Me a Better Catholic:

In our world fraught with division and despair, Jordan Denari Duffner's experiences bring a fresh insight into Muslim-Catholic relations. In addition to recounting her many positive encounters with people of the Muslim faith, Jordan shares her insights in the ways that her own Catholic faith has deepened as a result. This book is an oasis of hope and a must read by all who take seriously the need for dialogue and understanding, particularly between Muslims and Catholics.

In 2016, Rozanski published "The Wideness of God's Mercy: A Pastoral Letter Reflecting on Evangelization" on the diocesan website.

The gay community feels that they aren't welcome.

Rozanski asked "each parish, as part of their evangelization efforts, to study and examine the needs of their people and local community to determine how they can provide for them."

Ambiguous Position on Homosexuality

He then provided "some areas to focus on" based on the "diocesan survey," including: "The gay community feels that they aren't welcome. They don't want to espouse another religion; therefore, they don't attend church at all. Hopefully, a special outreach could be done to them."

Many were confused, wondering what exactly Rozanski wanted his priests to focus on regarding practicing homosexuals who feel unwelcome. Then, in December 2019, the bishop compounded confusion regarding his stance by forbidding the Pioneer Valley Gay Men's Chorus to sing at a parish Christmas concert.

Catholic Hospital Challenged

A Catholic hospital is under fire for standing up for divine law and the case is heading to the Supreme Court.

In 2016, a woman calling herself Evan Minton approached Mercy San Juan Medical Center, just north of Sacramento, demanding a hysterectomy to complete her so-called gender transition.

But when hospital officials learned the surgery was not for any medical emergency, the surgery was canceled.

Minton filed a lawsuit in a California court in 2017, claiming Mercy San Juan and its parent company, Dignity Health, were discriminating against her because she was transgender.

The hospital claimed, "It is our practice not to provide sterilization services" and added, "Procedures that induce sterility are permitted when their direct effect is the cure or alleviation of a present and serious pathology and a simpler treatment is not available."

It also quoted the U.S. Catholic bishops' directive "Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services," saying:

Direct sterilization of either men or women, whether permanent or temporary, is not permitted in a Catholic health care institution. Procedures that induce sterility are permitted when their direct effect is the cure or alleviation of a present and serious pathology and a simpler treatment is not available.

But in 2019, a California appeals court ruled the hospital discriminated against Minton and violated California civil rights law.

The case, still ongoing, is headed to the U.S. Supreme Court where the justices will decide if Catholic institutions have the right to adhere to Church teaching or if they must submit to gender ideology.

Vatican Official: COVID Proves Immigrants Essential

VATICAN CITY (ChurchMilitant.com) - The Canadian Jesuit who has led the Vatican's Migrants and Refugees Office since 2017 says COVID-19 has proved how essential immigrants are to developed nations.

Without distinguishing between legal and illegal immigrants, Cdl. Michael Czerny told Catholic News Agency the crisis caused by the Wuhan virus has made the plight of many vulnerable immigrants even more precarious and highlights how essential immigrants are to the fabric of society.

Image

Lamenting the increased vulnerability wrought by the Wuhan pandemic, Czerny elaborated on how vital immigrants are to the life and economy of nations.

"Who are the orderlies and the cleaning people and who are the support staff in the hospitals? Who are the people who are picking the fruit and vegetables that we really do need to receive?" he asked.

"Who are the people who are taking care of our elderly or challenged people or other people who need support and care?" he continued. "Many, many, many of them are people in these categories [of migrant or refugee], who are here doing the work because it's the work we need."

Czerny noted that during the pandemic, governments have significantly restricted entrance of migrants and refugees into their countries. The United States has forbidden travel from China and Europe as part of its national precautions and tightened immigration possibilities. In some nations, including the United States, officials have allowed temporary visas for those who work at jobs classified as essential, such as meatpacking, farming and seasonal work.

Czerny asserted that "until now, we sort of took them for granted — and some political forces even tried to use them for political advantages — but the fact is, they are essential supports for our societies and for our communities and for our families."

"Suddenly," Czerny concluded, "the COVID-19 spotlight reveals that without the help of these people, we can't go on."

The cardinal has slammed conservatives for backing border security, accusing them of "xenophobia and isolationism."

Czerny was appointed cardinal by Pope Francis in 2019, part of a wave of liberal nominees emphasizing compassion and mercy at the expense of truth and justice.

contributor to the pope's environmental encyclical Laudato Sí, Czerny was appointed by Francis to present the exhortation Querida Amazonia at the initial post-Amazon Synod press conference last October. When asked if married priests or women clergy were "still open for discussion and application," he told reporters these questions are still "being studied" and are not yet closed.

The cardinal has slammed conservatives for backing border security, accusing them of 'xenophobia and isolationism.'

Czerny said of immigration in the past couple months that with countries enforcing quarantines, a lot of international movement has come to a halt. Yet, people in desperate situations continue to seek work or safety, so some "movement continues, and unfortunately criminal activity continues," he said. Reports indicate exploitation of undocumented migrants for slave labor, always present, has likely been on the rise during the lockdown.

Even before the pandemic, migrating illegally from one country to another was dangerous. Migrants traveling north from Central America continue to face many hurdles, including dangerous criminal elements; many suffer assaults, robbery and abduction by criminal gangs. There are also reports of extortion and ill-treatment by police and immigration officials in Central American nations along the route. Tragically, some migrants are killed before they ever get to the states.

According to the Mexican National Human Rights Commission, 20,000 migrants are kidnapped every year in this region by criminal gangs. One emigrant who jumped a train told Amnesty International (AI), "The rate was $100 per station. They threatened us. They said they would hold us until we could call a relative to arrange to pay. If you couldn't pay, they would throw you off the roof."  Summarizing his experience, he added "In spite of all the hardships we left, the real nightmare is the journey through Mexico."

AI has also reported on the horrific ordeal women and girls face during the trek. Health professionals report that as many as six in ten female migrants are raped during the journey north. Additionally, abducted women and girls are vulnerable to sex trafficking.

In spite of such statistics, Czerny expressed hope that "the crisis of coronavirus will encourage the authorities ... to make more regular and easier the passage of people who need to move, because, for example, they're needed in various sectors, industries, and services" in countries to which they are traveling.

ROCKVILLE, Md. (ChurchMilitant.com) - Citizens of Montgomery County, Maryland are suing the county's chief executive and director of the Department of Health and Human Services for illegally using taxpayer funds to support "unlawfully present aliens."

Image
Montgomery Council Chief Executive Marc Elrich

On April 30, the all-Democrat Montgomery County Council unanimously approved "a special appropriation of $5 million to provide additional direct financial assistance to low-income County residents in response to the COVID-19 public health emergency."

According to the lawsuit, filed with assistance from the conservative watchdog group Judicial Watch, the narrowly-cast eligibility criteria almost guarantee that "unlawfully present aliens will be the primary — if not exclusive — recipients" of these taxpayer-funded cash grants. Since under federal law, "unlawfully present aliens" are ineligible for state or local public benefits, the plaintiffs are suing on behalf of Maryland County taxpayers for pecuniary losses.

Political commentators like Fox News' Tucker Carlson regularly feature stories from Montgomery County, presenting the suburban D.C. community as yet another East Coast example of life under a Democrat-controlled regime.

With 'Unlawfully Present Aliens' Like These ...

In July, Montgomery Council Chief Executive Marc Elrich signed "Promoting Community Trust," an executive order in which he refused to use county resources to enforce federal immigration laws so that all county residents would feel welcome.

Five weeks after signing the order, Elrich found himself in front of a bank of television cameras explaining why seven undocumented immigrants living in the county had been arrested on sex assault charges. According to the Washington Post, two male "unlawfully present aliens" were accused of raping the same 11-year-old girl. In another case, an unlawfully present alien was accused of trying to choke a woman to death in a hallway of her apartment building.

The problems in Montgomery County first came to light in 2017 when a 14-year-old, ninth-grade girl accused her 17-year-old and 18-year-old classmates of raping her in a school bathroom. All charges were dropped against the two "unlawfully present aliens" whom Rockville High School officials enrolled as ninth graders.

It came out the 14-year-old had sent pornographic photos to one of the males, then video footage failed to corroborate her claim the ménage à trois had been non-consensual. In a state where Catholics are the largest religious group and that is home to the likes of Catholic elites like Brett Kavanaugh, concerns began to grow about the direction the county was heading.

Catholic Bishops Complicit

As Church Militant has documented, "cash — not Christ — is the key motivator" behind the U.S. bishops' immigration obsession, and Montgomery County's Catholic Charities is in the thick of it.

The bishops back the settlement of 'unlawfully present aliens' because the federal government pays them a bounty for each person they help.

One local Catholic resident, who spoke directly with local "unlawfully present aliens," reported on his conversation:

They said that Catholic Charities was very helpful, in fact, essential, for getting started here in America. They provided Mass, food, sacraments and legal help. The ladies downstairs provided counseling and a safe play area for the kids while their parents dealt with getting into the State of Maryland Department of Human Resources system for SNAP [Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program] and housing assistance.

The bishops back the settlement of "unlawfully present aliens" because the federal government pays them a bounty for each person they help. Federal grants snowballed in the latter years of the Obama administration, totaling nearly 40% of U.S. Catholic bishops' annual operating budget by 2016. Given the bishops' financial dependence on immigration as a source of revenue, few observers are surprised the prelates issue statement after statement promoting open borders.

Closing the Cathedral

In only three hours, I, Bp. Robert "Bob" Smith of the diocese of Modernia, shall leave this cathedral and its rectory, which will then become the property of the city. Though I can now plainly see the whole chain of events which has led to this abandonment of the diocesan cathedral, I confess I am aghast at the speed of all these things.

Image
post-Vatican II days

I remember the excitement of the immediate post-Vatican II days, as every priest — or so it seemed — shared in the fever of novelty, each priest bent upon showing how modern and progressive he was by instituting changes and "updates" permitted by the luxurious ambiguity of the Council's documents. Revolution was in the air, and we experimented with everything in the Church, giddily indulging our creative flair.

As time passed, we tried to show the world just how modern we could be. We scrapped Latin and so many of the old ways. We thought many of the changes were small. People were told they could eat meat on Fridays; that they could go to Sunday Mass on Saturday; that we could move the dates of Holy Days of Obligation for sheer convenience; that there was no need to worry about that old Baltimore Catechism, which insisted on outdated memorization; that modern music could be sung at Mass or played by guitars; that priests could be known as, say, "Fr. Joe," instead of that stuffy "Fr. Jones" label; that Mass was a happy meal with happy homilies and happy hymns; that sacred reminders of mortality were outdated; and that we Catholics could be just as au courant as anybody else.

We divorced and contracepted and aborted and euthanized to an extent about equal with atheists.

We were Catholics but not zealots — relax!

Oh, we proved it: We divorced and contracepted and aborted and euthanized to an extent about equal with atheists. In any case, many, perhaps most, of us no longer believed with a supernatural faith. The Church had become a non-governmental organization (NGO), and we politically promoted what we called social justice. We rarely mentioned salvation, and few priests and bishops spoke regularly and devoutly that old language about contrition for sin and firm purpose of amendment.

Free clip from CHURCH MILITANT Premium

When the world said men could become women and women, men; when homosexual marriage was legally sanctioned; when euthanasia spread across the land; when our Catholic campuses taught heresy and called it education; when countless other evils were lauded and applauded — we bishops often smiled and cavorted with the very politicians who, in word and deed, despised the Catholic faith and wanted to destroy it.

Then came the order to close our churches and to deny the remaining faithful the sacraments. Of course, we complied, for in so many cases, we had no king but Caesar. Then, the "all clear" was sounded, and we were shocked — shocked! — at how many Catholics did not return.

We bishops often smiled and cavorted with the very politicians who, in word and deed, despised the Catholic faith and wanted to destroy it.

By and large, though, we were not concerned with their souls but with their wallets, for there was now not enough money to support our bloated bureaucracy and our inflated salaries and our extravagant rectories. We bishops began to tax the diocesan churches at an even higher rate than before the virus hit. Suddenly, though, the churches, too, were strapped; their funds were also very limited.

We let the people bring into church any idols or superstitious items they liked so that they could pray to or with them. A few people objected to this practice but, after all, the Vatican did it. So why couldn't our diocese? The environment is everything, and some of those idols might help us get cleaner air.

Image
Pachamama in the Vatican

When the first woman surgically to become a man wanted to be a priest, we embraced her — er, him — and celebrated! As New York's Cdl. Timothy Dolan once said about the "coming out" of a homosexual football player: "Bravo!"

As I leave my rectory for the last time, I admit that I am puzzled. I really tried to be a popular bishop. I didn't go around threatening people or try to call a halt to their pleasures and profits. To get along you've got to go along, I always preached!

I really tried to be one of the boys and — oh yeah, girls, too — and if one of my priests or priestesses was doing something contrary to the old Faith, well, I was willing to bend the rules for him or her or hir (or whatever the modern pronoun might be).

A good bishop learns to look the other way! I mean, what is charity all about? In everything I wrote or said, I put the people first. I was never a scold, and I was never a disciplinarian like some U.S. Army drill sergeant. I asked for more money, yes, but I never got (quite) the salary that other CEOs got and what I certainly deserved.

Like the martyred Fr. Edmund Campion in England in the 16th century, those priests who now visit the homes of the outdated Catholics for the Mass and other sacraments (even confession), preach and prophesy a restored Catholic faith, trusting in God to resurrect His Church. Can you imagine that they actually hold sacred all that the Church traditionally taught, believed and practiced? They'll never succeed, though. They aren't nearly progressive enough.

Of course, the above is pure fiction. Isn't it? One is reminded of Malachi's prophecy: "It is the duty of priests to teach the true knowledge of God. People should go to them to learn my [God's] will, because they are the messengers of the Lord Almighty. But now you priests have turned away from the right path. Your teaching has led many to do wrong. You have broken the covenant I made with you" (2:7–8 GNB). And one reads in Jeremiah: "I [The Lord] will condemn the person who turns away from me and puts his trust in man, in the strength of mortal man" (17:5). Wisdom relates: "The worship of idols, whose names should never be spoken, is the beginning and end, the cause and the result, of every evil" (14:27).

Catholic Emergency Preparedness

A new book seeks to guide Catholics through emergencies and times of crisis.

Deacon Nick Donnelly

Deacon Nick Donnelly is the author of upcoming book Catholic Survival Guide for Times of Emergency, set to be published by TAN (Tuum Adoramus Nomen) Books.

Donnelly, who is based in the United Kingdom, told Church Militant last week, "My forthcoming book from TAN ... gives the faithful the doctrines and devotions to enable us to face crises in our lives with the knowledge and fortitude that God always meant us to have, but which have been sadly neglected since Vatican II."

An official summary of the book says it will "help you know what to do when deprived of confession or Holy Communion; when suffering life-threatening situations without a priest; when preparing for God's judgment on your own; if a family member is dying on their own and if grieving without the assistance of a priest."

Donnelly elaborated in his comments to Church Militant:

When deprived of  confession or Holy Communion, God in His providence has given us the Act of Perfect Contrition and spiritual Communion. A Catholic Survival Guide for Times of Emergency sets out the conditions established by the Church for these devotions to be efficacious instruments of sanctifying and eucharistic grace. When suffering life-threatening situations without a priest, my book explains step-by-step the traditional art of dying well and devotions to St. Joseph that prepare us for the grace of a happy death.

The summary goes on to state, "A Catholic Survival Guide for Times of Emergency will also provide you with Sacred Scripture for times of emergency, traditional prayers for times of national emergency and guidance about when and how to perform an emergency baptism."

Donnelly wrote the book in recent months, during the ongoing Wuhan virus pandemic.

"As I watched the news of churches being closed around the world," he said, "I became more and more concerned that the faithful would be facing a life-threatening illness without the sacraments or assistance of their clergy."

He went on to state, "As a deacon, I found it unbearable thinking of my fellow Catholics being quarantined in a hospital and coping with serious illness, even dying, on their own."

"So I started to think about how I could help," Donnelly said. "I knew that God in His providence would have provided the means to give His people the wisdom and graces to face this test. I turned to the wealth of traditional devotions and found so many ways that Catholics in the past rose to the challenge of plague and other calamities."

As a deacon I found it unbearable thinking of my fellow Catholics being quarantined in a hospital and coping with serious illness, even dying, on their own.

This research into traditions led to a number of articles, some of them published by Church Militant.

For practicing Catholics, an especially devastating part of the Wuhan virus pandemic has been the loss of access to Mass and the sacraments.

In March, every single Catholic diocese in the United States instituted a ban on public Masses. Two months later, many dioceses have announced plans to gradually return to normal.

In addition to the ban on public liturgy, some dioceses have gone so far as to restrict confessions and baptisms. Others have prohibited parishes from keeping their doors open for private prayer.

Some Catholics have been irate at the bishops for taking drastic measures in the name of combating the virus.

For example, an anonymous contributor to conservative website The Federalist recently argued, "The American bishops' decision to withhold the sacraments ... forsakes the examples of the saints, forsakes the vows of the Church and runs exactly contrary to Christ's chastisement of the Pharisees and His challenge to the Apostles to 'put out into the deep.'"

Christian Minorities Languishing

WASHINGTON (ChurchMilitant.com) — A top American diplomat is underscoring the threat of persecution faced by Christian minorities in the developing world.

President Trump's ambassador-at-large for international religious freedom, Sam Brownback, told media outlets in a May 14 conference call that Christians in multiple countries are being targeted for their faith.

Image
Ambassador Sam Brownback (Qiling Wang, Deseret News)

Ambassador Brownback, a faithful Catholic, highlighted seven Asian countries actively violating religious minorities' human rights: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Burma, China, India, Malaysia and Pakistan.

Persecution in Pakistan

Spotlighting the plight of Pakistani Christians, Brownback confirmed to Church Militant that a "starve or convert" campaign is underway in the Muslim-majority country, through which food aid is being denied to Christians unless they convert to Islam.

The ambassador also confirmed that his office is tracking humanitarian aid to Pakistan, as well as other nations, and will review how food is being distributed amid the Wuhan virus pandemic.

Brownback also noted that Christians, who make up 80% to 90% of Pakistan's hospital sanitation workers, are performing their duties inside the country's medical centers without Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

The ambassador had no update on the condition of Catholic teenager Huma Younus, who in October 2019 was abducted from her home and forced to marry a Muslim.

Younus' case has progressed up the judiciary and is awaiting a hearing in Pakistan's Supreme Court. Lower courts have ruled against the young girl, arguing that a woman can be forcibly married off as long as she has had her first menstrual cycle. This application of Sharia Law is in opposition to the 2014 Child Marriage Restraint Act.

Ambassador Brownback said he's unable to predict what the outcome will be for Younus and other teenage girls like her, because although "the Pakistani courts, at times, will really step up and do the right thing ... unfortunately, a lot of members of the judiciary, I'm afraid, are afraid of the violence that will be directed at them if they do the right thing."

There are two scandals here — what is happening to Christian minorities in places such as Pakistan and the refusal of so much of the western media to consider it newsworthy.

It has taken several years for Pakistan's Minority Commission to be instituted, and it is already succumbing to public pressure in denying a place on the council to a subsect of Islam, the Ahmadis, which are a minority in Pakistan and subjected to similar treatment as their Christian neighbors.

Chinese Tyranny

Brownback also spoke to the growing crackdown on religious groups in China, noting the Communist government has continued its aggression against all religions during the Wuhan virus outbreak.

The regime is forcing Uyghur Muslims to work in a concentration camp-like fashion, as well as conducting a campaign against Buddhists in Tibet by sending in 1 million law enforcement officers to conduct a search into 10 million Tibetan homes.

Persecution of Chinese Christians has reached levels not seen since the Cultural Revolution of the 1960s. Government repression has skyrocketed since the China-Vatican agreement was signed in 2018. As previously reported by Church Militant:

While Pope Francis has asked Chinese Christians to be "good citizens" by not "engaging in proselytism," the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has intensified the persecution of faithful Catholic clergy, manufacturing new and dehumanizing pressure tactics to coerce them into joining the CCP's Chinese Patriotic Catholic Association (CPCA).

President Trump has been a vocal critic of China and its allies for their role in the Wuhan crisis. Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden, along with other top Democrats and their allies in the media, continue to show support for the Communist regime.

Secular Media Silence

During the conference call with Brownback, representatives from CNN, The Wall Street Journal and the Associated Press, among others, were not interested in asking about Christians and instead directed their interest to minority Muslims and Sikhs. The Associated Press even took the time to thank Brownback for having not been negative about the World Health Organization in his public statements.

Dr. Martin Parsons, an independent consultant on Christian persecution in Pakistan and Afghanistan, has slammed the lack of media coverage of Christian persecution.

Persecution of Chinese Christians has reached levels not seen since the Cultural Revolution of the 1960s.

"There are two scandals here — what is happening to Christian minorities in places such as Pakistan and the refusal of so much of the western media to consider it newsworthy," he noted.

Parsons warned that persecution continues to build:

The situation of Christians in Pakistan is like the proverbial frog in a saucepan of boiling water which is slowly heated up. For years now they have not only increasingly suffered from large-scale violence, including the abduction and forced conversion to Islam of large numbers of Christian women and girls, but the police and courts have too often been apathetic or even complicit in these acts.

"With the pandemic, we are now reaching the point where disproportionately large numbers of Pakistani Christians could die, either from the virus itself or from starvation — exacerbated by the massive discrimination they already face," Parsons added.

Dems Short Catholic Schools

WASHINGTON (ChurchMilitant.com) - House Democrats are not interested in rescuing Catholic schools suffering financial loss after being shut down by the Wuhan virus scare.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's $3 trillion stimulus bill that Democrats narrowly passed on Friday is cutting out Catholic schools that are financially strapped by the pandemic-related closures.

The bill, titled Health and Economic Recovery Omnibus Emergency Solutions Act, or HEROES, goes so far as to rescind previous funding provided to Catholic schools that was already earmarked in the earlier $2 trillion CARES stimulus act passed with overwhelming bipartisan support in March.

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) is urging state Catholic conferences to push back in attempts to defeat the bill.

Excluded From Relief

The USCCB's associate director for public policy in the Secretariat of Catholic Education, Jennifer Daniels, is questioning why a relief bill isn't offering relief to everyone.

"The key thing to this bill is not that it is an education bill, it's an emergency relief bill," remarked Daniels. "When in history have we excluded those suffering from an emergency from federal relief?"

When in history have we excluded those suffering from an emergency from federal relief?

The Democrats' HEROES package cuts out funding for equitable service to all nonpublic schools that was already legislated by the CARES act, which President Donald Trump signed into law in March. HEROES further targets U.S. private education in other ways.

The House bill excludes direct assistance to families for tuition expenses or any tax incentives that could be used towards tuition. It also contains a measure that excludes funding for nonpublic schools, except for limited cases involving children with disabilities. It rescinds such schools receiving $90 billion in school aid already set up by CARES as well as benefiting from a discretionary fund placed under the secretary of education also contained in CARES.

"When Congress releases emergency relief bills, it's available to everyone who is suffering from that emergency," Daniels commented to CNS. "All we're saying is that private schools are suffering right next to the public schools, and we should have access to emergency relief funds."

She added, "All we want is our fair share and for our children to be served in an equal manner."

Catholics Fighting Back

Bishop David O'Connell of Trenton, New Jersey is urging Catholics in his diocese to fight back. He's directing them to storm members of Congress and demand the bill be defeated.

Private schools are suffering right next to the public schools.

"We're trying to urge Congress to maintain equitable access to federal funding for nonpublic schools and their [students'] families as they have in previous legislation," commented O'Connell to CNS.

His Catholics are mobilizing as of May 15, according to O'Connell. Within 24 hours of his directive, O'Connell related that more than 7,000 messages hit Congress with 5,200 coming directly from his own diocese of Trenton.

"We just want to make sure that as we face the economic difficulties we're all facing, that those who have children in nonpublic or Catholic schools have the equal opportunity to provide what the government offers us," he said.

One letter sent to Congress on May 14 came from Michael Schuttloffel, executive director of the Council for American Private Education or CAPE. The USCCB is a member of the CAPE council. In his letter, Schuttloffel expressed "extreme disappointment" with the "unworkable" education provisions in the HEROES act.

"If passed, these provisions would eliminate from eligibility for aid almost all students enrolled by their parents in private schools," wrote Schuttloffel. "To approve such policies would be to send a message that the House of Representatives is only concerned with the safety of some of America's students and teachers, not all."

The Republican-controlled Senate is taking a dim view of the Democrats' bloated $3 trillion stimulus bill. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell last week called the 1,815-page package a "liberal wish list." The Senate is vowing to draft its own version instead.
